About EV Charger Installation Sydney

EV Charger Installation Sydney is for Sydney drivers who want a charger fitted at home and want to understand the job before anyone picks up a tool. This website is not an electrical contractor and does not do installation work itself. It explains the choices, the NSW rules and the paperwork in plain words, so you can decide what suits your car, your switchboard and your property, then request a quote here and a licensed and insured local contractor can follow up.

Who this site is for

Typically you are a Sydney homeowner with an electric car, new or on order, and you are weary of trickle charging from a garage power point. Some live in a freestanding house in the Hills District or the west. Others are in an apartment on the lower North Shore or near the beaches and need to work through strata before a wallbox goes on the car space wall.

Whichever group you fit, the aim is the same: help you know what to ask and what to compare.

What the guides cover

The service pages walk through the main kinds of residential charging work:

  • A standard home wallbox in a garage or carport
  • Apartment and strata car spaces
  • Tesla Wall Connector fitting
  • Pairing a charger with rooftop solar
  • Switchboard upgrades when the existing board is near capacity
  • Three phase charging for faster top ups
  • Smart chargers with app control and scheduling

Each one explains when that option makes sense and what tends to shape the scope of the job.

Who does the installation work

A fixed EV charger is electrical wiring work, and in NSW it is done by licensed professionals. There is no separate EV charger licence in this state; the work sits under ordinary electrical licensing, whatever the size of the job. You can check a contractor's licence through the NSW Government before you agree to anything.

When the wiring is finished, the electrician has to test it and lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work through the BCNSW eCert system within seven days. It is worth asking for a copy for your records.

A few things worth knowing early

  • Council approval. Most home chargers do not need it, provided the installation meets the exempt development conditions in the NSW transport and infrastructure planning rules. If it falls outside them, another approval path such as a development application applies.
  • The charger itself. Look for the Regulatory Compliance Mark on the unit you choose.
  • Footpaths and kerbs. Any work in a public road reserve needs consent from the roads authority, so street side charging is a different conversation from a garage install.
  • Contracts. If the job is likely to cost more than $5,000 including GST, NSW requires a written contract, and the deposit cannot exceed 10% of the price.

Getting started on your own charger

Before you request a quote, note the make and model of your car, where you would like the charger mounted, roughly how far that spot is from your switchboard, and whether your home has single or three phase power. If you live in a strata building, check whether the owners corporation already has an EV charging policy. Those details make it far easier to compare options on equal terms.
