Understanding a Tesla Wall Connector install in Sydney
A Wall Connector is a Level 2 wall charger on its own circuit from your switchboard. NSW has no separate charger licence, so a fixed install is electrical work for a licensed electrician. What shapes the job is your supply type, the cable run and where the unit mounts.
Single phase or three phase for a Wall Connector
The Wall Connector works on both. On single-phase power, the charge rate is capped by that one phase and by what the switchboard can spare, which still suits most overnight top ups. Three-phase supply lets the unit deliver more, provided the car can accept it. An electrician can confirm your supply type on site.
Why 22 kw on the box is not always 22 kw in the car
A charger rating is a ceiling, not a promise. Real speed is set by the lowest limit in the chain: the home supply, the circuit size and the onboard charger in the car itself. Some cars accept less AC power than a 22 kW unit can supply, so check your model's figure before paying for extra capacity.
The certified installer decision
Tesla lists certified installers, and some owners prefer them. Legally, NSW only requires the right electrical licence for wiring work, whatever the job is worth. Your own licensed electrician can do it, following Tesla's specifications and the relevant Australian Standards. If warranty terms matter to you, read Tesla's conditions before choosing.
Compliance once the Connector is live
After wiring, the electrician tests the work and lodges a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work through BCNSW eCert within seven days. A home charger meeting the exempt development rules needs no council approval. Running cable through a footpath or road reserve is different and needs the roads authority's consent.
Next step for your Wall Connector
First, stand where the Tesla parks, choose the wall for the connector and note whether the cable path to the switchboard crosses a slab, ceiling or garden bed. Then request a quote here and a licensed and insured local contractor can follow up.
What tesla wall connector installation can cover
Single-phase wall connector install
For homes on one phase, with the current limit set to what the switchboard can safely spare for overnight charging.
Three-phase wall connector install
For homes with three-phase supply, letting the unit deliver more power where the car can accept it.
Owner supplied wall connector
For Tesla owners who have already bought the unit and need it fitted to Tesla's specifications.
